El Tráfico: LA Galaxy vs LAFC

El Tráfico remains MLS’s most electrifying rivalry, blending star power, high stakes, and deep-rooted fan passion. In their last encounter on September 14, 2024, LA Galaxy staged a remarkable comeback, overturning a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat LAFC 4-2 at Dignity Health Sports Park. This victory not only secured a playoff berth for the Galaxy but also intensified the competition between these cross-town adversaries.

Looking ahead, the next chapter of this rivalry is set for May 18, 2025, at Dignity Health Sports Park. With LAFC aiming to reclaim dominance and the Galaxy striving to maintain their upper hand, the upcoming match promises to be another thrilling installment in this storied derby.

Promotion/Relegation Coming To American Soccer]]>

The United Soccer League (USL) announced today that a supermajority of club owners voted to implement a promotion and relegation system in American soccer, marking a groundbreaking decision that will reshape the future of the game in the United States. The USL becomes the first professional sports league in the U.S. to adopt this global model, creating an interconnected three-tiered men’s professional soccer system, where teams earn promotion to a higher division or face relegation to a lower division based on their performance during the season.

With this historic step, the USL aligns with the world’s top leagues—including the English Premier League, La Liga and Bundesliga—where promotion and relegation raises the stakes of every match, drives fan engagement, and elevates the overall competition of the game.

A new chapter in American soccer begins. The decision by our owners to approve and move forward with this bold direction is a testament to their commitment to the long-term growth of soccer in the United States,?said Alec Papadakis, CEO of the United Soccer League. “This is a significant milestone for the USL and highlights our shared vision with our team ownership to build a league that not only provides top-tier competition but also champions community engagement. Now, just as it is in the global game, more communities in America can aspire to compete at the highest level of soccer. It’s time.”?/p>

Promotion/Relegation In New 3 Tier League

Last month, the USL announced plans to launch a new Division One league in 2027-28, a pivotal step in its vision to establish a fully integrated three-tier professional system. As defined by U.S. Soccer Federation sanctioning standards, Division One is the highest level of professional soccer in the United States. With the USL Championship (Division Two) and USL League One (Division Three) already providing a strong foundation for player development and competition, the addition of a Division One league completes the structure. All three leagues will be interconnected through a structured promotion and relegation system, where more matches matter, rewarding performance and unlocking new opportunities for clubs, players, and fans.

“Promotion and relegation transforms the competitive landscape of American soccer,?said Paul McDonough, President and Chief Soccer Officer of the USL. “With the 2026 World Cup and other major international events approaching, we have a unique opportunity to build on that momentum and create a sustainable future for the sport in the U.S. Fans and stakeholders have been clear—they want something different. They’re drawn to the intensity of high-stakes competition, where more matches have real consequences—just like we see in European leagues. This shift challenges the status quo and brings a level of excitement and relevance that can elevate the game across the country.”?/p>

California’s Soccer Scene: A New Chapter Unfolds]]>

The MLS is getting a major shakeup as San Diego FC prepares for its debut season. The team’s training ground has been buzzing with non-stop action since preseason began. Every player knows what’s at stake and this isn’t just another expansion team going through the motions. You can see it in the intensity of their practice sessions and the focus on getting every detail right.

Mexican international Hirving Lozano is stealing the spotlight, and for good reason. After proving himself at Napoli, he’s now showing that same class in training. The chemistry he’s building with Paddy McNair, their smart pickup from Middlesbrough, has been impressive to watch.

The coaches aren’t taking any chances either; they’ve been hammering home defensive drills, knowing full well what they’re up against in the MLS. Fans who want to keep up with the team’s progress can find daily updates and interviews with players as they get ready for kickoff.

San Diego FC will face LA Galaxy on March 1. This matchup offers an early test, as the Galaxy remains one of the most successful clubs in MLS history.

With preseason preparations entering the final phase, supporters are watching closely, hoping for a strong start to a historic season. Those looking to explore further developments can follow training reports, lineup predictions, and player interviews leading up to kickoff.

European Influence: Juan Mata Joins Ownership

mikey varas of San Diego FC

The ownership group pulled off quite a coup by bringing Juan Mata on board. The former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder isn’t just another retired player jumping into ownership; he’s still actively playing while holding his stake in San Diego FC. This actually sets a new precedent in MLS, and Mata’s not just here for the show.

His experience in European football brings serious credibility to the organization, and his track record with social initiatives, especially Common Goal, fits perfectly with San Diego FC’s community-focused vision. The leadership team has been pretty clear: they want to build something sustainable that goes beyond just winning matches.

Coachella Valley Invitational: A Proving Ground

The Coachella Valley Invitational has evolved into something special. This year’s tournament features 14 MLS teams and six NWSL sides, making it the biggest edition yet. LA Galaxy and LAFC have been using these matches to experiment with different formations and tactical setups, while San Diego FC gets valuable experience against seasoned competition.

The tournament’s gained serious traction with soccer fans too. And the streaming numbers are up, and the crowds in Indio have been growing with each match.

What makes this year’s tournament particularly interesting is the inclusion of Angel City FC and Bay FC. This adds a whole new dimension to the competition. The quality of play in both the men’s and women’s matches has been consistently high, showing just how far professional soccer has come in California.

Women’s Soccer Revolution

Bay FC’s ownership group revolutionized women’s soccer with the Bay Collective initiative. The program scored a massive win by recruiting Kay Cossington from the English FA. Her stellar record in player development speaks for itself.

Sixth Street provides substantial financial backing to make real changes happen. The program invested heavily in advanced data analytics tools and built top-tier training facilities. This commitment proves Bay Collective’s plans to transform women’s soccer for years to come.

Rising Stars and Local Talent

California keeps churning out incredible soccer talent. Just look at Maximilian Arfsten. Raw skill and relentless work earned him a spot at the U.S. Men’s National Team January camp.

His story started on California youth fields. Those early years laid the foundation for his pro career. Now he dominates for Columbus Crew. His stellar play in the MLS Cup and Leagues Cup showed everyone what California soccer produces.

National team scouts noticed Arfsten’s abilities for clear reasons. He succeeds in multiple positions, and his quick field decisions make him valuable to any team. Arfsten credits his success to his time in California’s competitive youth soccer environment.

The state maintains a strong record of talent development, with excellent programs and tough competition at each age group. His local coaches remember him as a student of the game who pushed for excellence. This success confirms California’s status as a serious talent factory for American soccer.

Grassroots Excellence

The high school scene proves the strength of California’s soccer foundation. San Marcos High’s recent 3-0 victory over Santa Barbara High at Warkentin Stadium was more than just a win; it was a masterclass in tactical discipline.

Jose Ramirez put on a show to control the midfield while contributing to all three goals. The level of play showed just how technically advanced high school soccer has become in California.

The California Clásico Legacy

The 100th California Clásico between LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes last year lived up to its billing and then some. The 4-3 scoreline tells only part of the story; Riqui Puig’s winner came dramatically, and even Eriq Zavaleta’s red card couldn’t dampen the spectacle.

The Galaxy had to defend with ten men in the closing stages, but they showed why this fixture has become one of MLS’s premier rivalries. The passion from both sets of fans and the intensity on the field proved why this rivalry means so much to California soccer.

Looking Ahead

California soccer stands at a historic turning point. San Diego FC will soon join MLS, while initiatives like the Bay Collective advance women’s soccer to new levels. The state leads other regions in setting higher standards across all aspects of the sport.

California succeeds because every part works together. Professional teams expand as youth academies flourish. Both men’s and women’s soccer receive serious investment. Other states now study California as an example of proper soccer development.

The future looks bright for soccer in California. As San Diego FC prepares for its first season and the Bay Collective moves forward, California holds its position as America’s soccer powerhouse. Smart planning and investment at every level form a solid foundation. All signs indicate California will shape how soccer grows across the country in the years ahead.

The real progress comes from dedicated work. Strategic planning, consistent investment, and a clear vision for development created something exceptional. California builds more than soccer programs. It creates a blueprint for success that will transform the sport throughout America.

Is Wilfried Nancy Destined to Manage in the Premier League?]]>

Elite management at the highest level can be incredibly testing and stressful, yet Columbus Crew boss Wilfried Nancy is currently making it look incredibly straightforward. Since arriving at the Lower.com Field in December 2022, the 47-year-old has averaged 1.95 points per match across an 80-game period, and he has secured two major honours including the 2023 MLS Cup. Having beaten the bookies favourites LAFC to lift the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy, Nancy became the first black coach to win the MLS Cup, and he looks set to continue making history.

Once again, the Crew defied the betting odds to secure the Leagues Cup in August, defeating LAFC for the second time in nine months. Nancy’s winning mentality means that his side is often able to fight back from losing positions, and it would be ill-advised for fans, bettors or analysts to write them off at any stage. Despite being priced up as fifth favourites to retain the MLS Cup with the majority of the betting sites, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see the Black and Gold upset the odds once again at the beginning of December.

Nancy’s Management Style

wilfred nancy

The Frenchman may not have enjoyed a notable playing career, yet his ability to get the best out of his players and surround himself with positive personalities is outstanding. He is rarely seen barking instructions from the sidelines or lambasting his players for making mistakes. Instead, he creates a clear and defined strategy and as a result, his teams can dictate the tempo of the match whilst quickening or slowing the pace accordingly.

Although it may be unfair to describe the Crew as an ‘average?MLS side, Nancy has undoubtedly succeeded in elevating them and taking them to the next level. His teams are often slick in attack, and he helps to ensure that every single player in the XI performs their function to the nth degree. Nancy is able to foster tremendous team spirit and togetherness, and he regularly praises the collective effort of his players. He is a coach who wants his players to work within a clear structure, yet the players also have the freedom to express themselves within that system.

His impact at Montreal CF was sensational and although he accrued a slightly lower PPG during his time at Stade Saputo, he managed to guide the Canadians to second spot in the Eastern Conference despite working with a relatively modest budget. It was the first time in six seasons that the unfancied outfit had managed to reach the end-of-season play-offs and they were the only Canadian team to make it through to post-season.

Alistair Johnston is one of a handful of players who have excelled under Nancy’s tutelage. The 25-year-old, now at Celtic, credits the Frenchman with improving his understanding of the game, and enabling him to find his rhythm.

Nancy believes that his lack of success on the pitch is one of the major reasons for his success on the sidelines. The acknowledgement that his playing career was unlikely to amount to anything notable enabled him to hone his coaching style and prepare for the next stage of his career.

He also cites his early years as having a major influence on his interpersonal skills and shaping how he deals with the different personalities within his squad. During his father’s stint in the French Navy, he was able to travel to different ports around the world and was exposed to an incredible amount of diversity. As a result, he can empathise and respect everybody that he comes into contact with. This gives him an edge over many of his managerial peers in Major League Soccer.

Could Wilfried Nancy Cope with the Pressures of the Premier League?

This outstanding coach is undoubtedly destined for bigger and better things. Nancy may opt to return to his homeland at some stage and take up a position in Ligue 1, yet he may also fancy a crack at the English topflight.

Former MLS coaches haven’t enjoyed much success in the Premier League with Bob Bradley and Jesse Marsch both struggling to acclimatise to the rigours of the division. Former DC United coach Wayne Rooney returned to the UK and has subsequently struggled in the second tier, so Nancy would need to buck the trend to succeed in the EPL.

Regardless, the Crew’s coach does things differently and his passion and ambition should enable him to succeed at any level. His understanding of the game coupled with his man-management skills are highly transferable and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see his name slowly creep onto the radar of European clubs soon.

Could Argentina’s Copa America Success Derail Inter Miami’s MLS Cup Push?]]>

Major tournament football (soccer) is tough. Although Argentina breezed through to the semi-finals of Copa America, they faced obstacles along the way ?not least the fitness battles of Lionel Messi. The need to rest the 37-year-old, allied to an injury that he picked up along the way, has hampered the plans of Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni. If he thought he had problems, consider those of Inter Miami ?the MLS side Messi plays for who were thumped 1-6 by FC Cincinnati in July.

Miami Beached

The football betting odds for Major League Soccer still make Inter Miami favorites to lift the season-ending MLS Cup ?partly because, you would expect, the Messi factor.

But the football tips columns will be acutely aware that, as well as the games Messi has missed while competing at Copa America, there will likely be a period of rest that follows the tournament ?damaging Inter’s hopes of a maiden MLS Cup title.

All isn’t quite as it seems in the Miami camp either. As of early July, they were the highest-scoring team in the MLS, however the Expected Goals data had them ranked as just the eleventh most efficient attacking side in the competition.

That suggests they have over-performed in front of goal, which is due largely to the finishing skills of Messi and Luis Suarez. However, it’s likely that the pair of 37-year-olds will experience a downturn at some point during the campaign, at which time Miami will likely regress accordingly.

The other concern for Inter supporters is that they had, at the time of writing, conceded 37 goals in just 23 games. That’s an average of 1.6 per game, which you probably don’t need us to tell you is not the kind of foundation upon which trophies are won.

Inter Miami’s chiefs have spent large sums of money putting together their own ‘Galacticos?style roster, featuring Messi, Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. And while that might be a commercial draw, on the pitch the team is struggling to live up to expectations as the MLS Cup favorite.

Three is the Magic Number

Before Messi came along, it was another mercurial left-footed genius who was lauded as one of the very best in the MLS.

Carlos Vela has now departed Los Angeles FC, but he more than played his part in establishing the franchise as one of the most successful in the competition ?they’ve reached the last two MLS Cup finals, winning one (2022) and losing the other (2023).

The Mexican has been replaced as LAFC’s marquee signing by Hugo Lloris, who has helped his new employer to compile the MLS?best Expected Goals against column ?suggesting that, based upon the chances yielded, they are the best defensive side in the competition.

At the other end of the pitch, things are also going well. LAFC rank second in Expected Goals, revealing how comfortable they are in creating chances, while in Denis Bouanga ?who has an incredible 22-goal involvements in just 21 appearances ?they have a player in the hunt for the MLS MVP award.

So if you were to hang your hat on the most likely MLS Cup champion this season, it might not be Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami ?Los Angeles FC look far more at ease with the moniker.

St Louis SC ?And Its State-of-the-Art Stadium]]>

St. Louis has always been a sports town, even with its ups and downs. In March 2023, St Louis City SC had its launch as a Major League Soccer expansion team with a debut road game against Austin FC. It was a come-from-behind-win that set the stage for its growing fan base.

The other big news, though, was the amazing stadium that this team will call its home ?City Park. It is just one of the nine new stadiums built over the past five years, as soccer takes its place among the top major league sports in the US.

st louis sc stadium

This stadium was the vision of and privately financed by two prominent St Louis families ?the Taylors of Enterprise Leasing and the Kavanaughs of World Wide Technology. They proposed their plan to the City of St Louis in 2018, and it included far more than just a stadium. It included a proposal to revitalize an entire section of western St Louis that was left undeveloped due to a failed highway expansion project.

The result is nothing short of amazing. And as a “test match?in late 2022, the SC reserve team and visiting German Bayer Leverkusen. The first official home match with the senior team was held in March 2023, hosting Charlotte FC.

Cost and Capacity

For $458 million, St Louis SC has 31 acres featuring the club’s training facility and three other full-sized fields used for practice and academy. In fact, St Louis SC is one of the few teams in the world that has its training facility on the same grounds as its playing field.

City Park has a seating capacity of 22,500 which includes a standing section of 3,000. This section includes these fans?own pub called the Hellcat.

A unique feature of the stadium seating is that every fan will be within 120 feet of the field, the closest being just 15 feet away.

Other Physical Features of City Park

No artificial surface here. Players have a grass field with a built-in heating system that ensures the grass continues to grow during St Louis winters.

City Park is below ground level ?40- feet to be exact ?so that it does not interfere with the St Louis skyline.

The four corners of the stadium are open-air, so that each of these entry points serves as a welcoming message to city residents and others who may pass by.

Food, Drink, and Entertainment

No fast food chains will ever show their faces at City Park. Only local food fare will be available from 25 restaurants ?Italian, Mexican, BBQ, Cuban, Vietnamese, Filipino, and even vegan. A “chief flavor officer?determines food selections.

Local rapper Mystermind is in charge of the music. He recruits local and national bands from all music styles and genres.

Technology and Sustainability

City Park is ticketless, cashless, and paperless. Fans who download the app can order food and avoid the long lines. There are also self-service kiosks throughout the stadium.

The “zero waste?policy means that all waste is collected, recycled, or composted. And all energy is designed with the latest efficiency.

For Soccer Fans Who Want More

Never let it be said that St Louis would limit soccer fans to just St Louis SC and City Park. Sports bars throughout the metro area have come to focus on televising international soccer matches to meet the growing demands of fans. Here’s some straight talk about two of them.

Amsterdam Tavern

This great pub opened in 2008 in the South City area of Tower Grove. Soccer reigns supreme here, and team scarves decorate the entire place. Arsenal and the Dutch Club Ajax have a more prominent role of course. There is an outside patio area for smokers of anything legal, and a cool poster of Bob Marley in soccer gear. Food is served from the Damn next door and carried over to enjoy with bottled and draft beer.

ITap

Fellow soccer players and college buddies Brad Lobdell and Sean Conroy had a few beers one night and challenged each other to start a sports bar. They did this in a small corner in a far western suburb of St Louis in 2009, focusing on craft beer first and sports second. After a successful Super Bowl Sunday, they knew they were onto something.

Today ITap has bars in five locations throughout Missouri, though most are in the St Louis metro area.  Craft beers have been supplemented with many other spirits. Two of them are located in the Soulard and Delmar Loop areas where an eclectic and LGBTQ+ ?friendly crowd enjoys the environment. So, if you are a member of this community, access the Taimi app, find a like-minded local match, and hit one of these ITap locations. You can request the games and matches of your choice. Soccer has become a favorite. If a match is televised, you’ll see it.

Soccer Rocks in St Louis

From the new CityPark stadium down to local bars, soccer is earning its name and place in St Louis.

About Us

While we don’t like to be classified as a sports bar, we are a bar that likes sports. Brad and Sean met playing soccer in college, so from the beautiful game to the running of the bases you can find most of your favorite teams on our TVs. If you don’t see your game, ask your server. If we can get it, you can watch it. We pride ourselves as being everyone’s bar, relaxed and comfortable with a commitment to service and selection.

With locations in Soulard (St. Louis), Crossroads (KC), East Campus (Columbia, MO), the Delmar Loop (St. Louis), and Lee’s Summit, MO that “little bar that could?that opened in 2009 on a dare has sparked the craft beer flame that burns brightly still today.

The forward is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest but has failed to secure game time.

Former Liverpool Hero Set for MLS Transfer]]>

Speculation is mounting on a possible move to the MLS for Belgian forward Divock Origi as the AC Milan star looks set for a permanent exit from the San Siro in the near future. The former Liverpool man is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest but has failed to secure meaningful game time, and a move to the United States appears very likely.

former liverpool hero Divock Origi

The coming season looks set to be a pivotal one for the league, with Lionel Messi now bedded in at Inter Miami and Luis Suarez also joining the club and fans of the game stateside who want to place a wager on what is to come can make the most of the best MLS sportsbooks, where the range of betting opportunities are far wider than at other brands operating in the United States.

28-year-old Origi is something of a cult hero on Merseyside and is clearly a player well capable of making an impact in the MLS, having proven himself across Europe’s big leagues over the course of his career to date.

Brendan Rodgers signed Origi from Lille in 2014, but it was Jurgen Klopp who made the best use of the powerful attacker, chiefly as a backup option and one that proved very effective when necessary.

Champions League Hero

Origi made a total of 175 appearances for the Premier League side, albeit 107 of those were from the bench, and he scored 41 goals in that period, many of which were crucial. His two goals against FC Barcelona earned Liverpool a place in the UEFA Champions League Final, where he duly netted in the club’s victory over Tottenham.

He left to join AC Milan in July 2022, where he managed just two goals in 36 appearances before being loaned out to Forest. Among the MLS teams said to be considering a move for Origi are Los Angeles FC, Cincinnati and Dallas.

His loan move at Forest may end early as AC Milan seek to make money from a switch to MLS, where any loan move would include an obligation to buy, albeit for a paltry sum.

The MLS continues to push itself as the location for top European-based stars, and they have had to battle with Saudi Arabia for the best talents around, though one side is certainly seemingly capable of luring talents, and that’s Inter Miami.

With the likes of Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets already among the stars Gerardo Martino has to call upon in Miami, David Beckham’s franchise pushed the boat out further to land another legendary star, Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan joins his former Barca teammates, though, in the preseason, things are still yet to quite catch alight. Inter Miami played FC Dallas at the Cotton Bowl in front of over 30,000 fans, but even with both Suarez and Messi playing together for an hour, Martino’s side lost 1-0, with Jesus Ferreira scoring the only goal of the game.

Next up for Inter Miami is a trip to Saudi Arabia for the Riyadh Season Cup, where they will take on Al Hilal and Al Nassr, with the second of these clashes offering the marketing dream of a clash between Messi and his former La Liga foe, Cristiano Ronaldo.
