Prior to the start of the match, former New York City FC forward and MLS Cup champion Valentín Castellanos was honored and ignited the ceremonial smokestacks. The 2021 Golden Boot winner scored in all three of his appearances during the 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs, including the opening goal in the MLS Cup Final, helping New York City FC secure its first league title.

New York City FC recorded an emphatic 4-0 win against Atlanta United on Thursday night. A clinical four-goal burst, including a Hannes Wolf brace and strikes from Bakrar and Moralez, capped a dominant performance. Tomás Romero impressed on his MLS debut, while City’s high press and attacking fluency sealed their biggest win yet under Pascal Jansen.

A warm summer evening in the Bronx set the stage for New York City FC’s Thursday night clash against Atlanta United.

Eager to build on their spirited 2-2 draw with Nashville SC, City entered the contest with purpose. Head Coach Pascal Jansen made five changes to the lineup, notably handing Tomás Romero his MLS debut in goal.

First Half

The home side started brightly, pressing high and forcing several early corners. Their first real chance came in the ninth minute, when Justin Haak found space in the box and let fly, only to see his effort blocked by Alexey Miranchuk.

Moments later, captain Thiago Martins rose highest to meet a corner with a thundering header, drawing a sharp save from Atlanta’s veteran goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

Atlanta struggled to create much going forward until the 32nd minute, when Miranchuk nearly turned the tide with a powerful strike from distance that rattled the crossbar. Just five minutes later, the visitors thought they had taken the lead. Derrick Williams met a corner with a strong header, and Jamal Thiaré turned it over the line ?only to see the goal ruled out for offside.

City took full advantage of the reprieve. Just before halftime, Maxi Moralez forced a poor pass from Brooks Lennon, that allowed Hannes Wolf to intercept the ball deep in Atlanta territory.

The Austrian quickly found Moralez, who in turn made no mistake, coolly slotting the ball past Guzan at his near post to give City a deserved 1-0 lead.

Second Half

City began the second half with electric intent, scoring three goals in a breathtaking five-minute spell that stunned the visitors.

The flurry began in the 54th minute when Mounsef Bakrar found the net. Having been denied just moments earlier, the Algerian striker responded in emphatic fashion, firing a crisp first-time finish from the edge of the box to double City’s lead.

Barely three minutes later, it was 3-0. A sweeping counter-attack saw Maxi Moralez turn creator, slipping a perfectly timed pass to Hannes Wolf. The Austrian forward made no mistake, bending a precise shot beyond Brad Guzan.

City weren’t done. In the 59th minute, Wolf struck again. This time, Justin Haak unlocked Atlanta’s high defensive line with a superb through ball.

Wolf raced onto it and showed ice-cold composure, dinking the ball over the onrushing Guzan to seal his brace and City’s fourth of the night.

Jansen turned to his bench for the first time on the 73rd minute to make a triple substitution. On came Kevin O’Toole, Nico Cavallo, and Tayvon Gray, in place of Strahinja Tanasijevič, Birk Risa, and Agustín Ojeda.

Atlanta continued to look for a route back into the game and that saw Miranchuk fire off a shot that required a last ditch block from Haak to divert it away from goal.

Bakrar’s night would end in the 78th minute as he was replaced by Seymour Reid. City’s final change of the night saw Jonathan Shore replace Julián Fernández.

City would ride out the rest of the game to confirm an emphatic 4-0 win at home—their biggest winning margin of the Pascal Jansen era so far.

New York City FC wrapped up a demanding May schedule with a trip to take on Nashville SC on Saturday afternoon.

Looking to bounce back from a midweek defeat, City made one change to the starting XI that faced Houston, with Agustín Ojeda coming in for Julián Fernández.

First Half

The hosts entered the match in strong home form, and it showed early as they carved out several promising chances.

The best of those opportunities fell to Walker Zimmerman, who found space on a corner thanks to a clever run. His header bounced into the turf and drifted just wide of Matt Freese’s post.

City nearly struck at the other end when Birk Risa delivered a beautifully curled ball in behind the defense, putting Alonso Martínez through on goal. Joe Willis stood tall to deny the Costa Rican.

Nashville eventually found the breakthrough in the 27th minute. Hany Mukhtar’s slick backheel released Sam Surridge, who fired low past Freese to make it 1-0.

City almost responded through Thiago Martins, but his header was kept out by a strong save from Willis. Instead, Nashville doubled their lead before the break. This time, Alex Muyl cut the ball back into the box, and Surridge was again on hand to finish with confidence.

Second Half

Jansen made two changes at halftime, introducing Strahinja Tanasijević and Keaton Parks for Tayvon Gray and Aidan O’Neill.

The changes had an almost immediate impact. In the 54th minute, Parks showed quick feet during a crisp buildup, playing in an overlapping Hannes Wolf, who tucked his shot past Willis to halve the deficit.

Momentum shifted further in City’s favor minutes later when Freese launched a rapid counterattack. Parks picked out Martínez, whose driven shot from a tight angle rippled the side netting.

Nashville pushed to restore their two-goal advantage. Surridge struck the post just after the hour, and Mukhtar nearly buried the rebound, only for Freese to make a brilliant save on the line.

City continued to press. Risa smashed a free kick off the crossbar before Jansen made a trio of changes—Nico Cavallo, Mounsef Bakrar, and Julián Fernández replacing Risa, Maxi Moralez, and Ojeda.

Martínez went close again with a low drive that skimmed past the post.

The breakthrough finally came in the 87th minute, with Parks once again involved. Wolf latched onto a bouncing ball inside the area and got the slightest of touches to steer the ball beyond a helpless Willis, completing City’s comeback and securing a well-earned point.

New York City FC fell 3-0 to the Houston Dynamo on a rainy Wednesday in the Bronx. Despite early chances and late pressure, City couldn’t break through. A wet Wednesday in the Bronx was the setting for New York City FC’s midweek clash with the Houston Dynamo.

City came into the game fresh off back-to-back wins and were keen to make it three in a row as they welcomed Ben Olsen’s side to the Five Boroughs.

First Half

Pascal Jansen named an unchanged side from the one that beat Chicago Fire just a few days earlier. That almost paid early dividends when a clever through ball from Maxi Moralez put Alonso Martínez through on goal. Unfortunately, an offside flag halted the play.

Minutes later, Jonathan Shore drove toward the byline and danced along it before firing a low shot that earned City a corner.

At the other end, Nico Lodeiro pounced on a loose ball in the area and fired off a shot that Tayvon Gray did well to block.

However, the hosts would take the lead from the resulting corner after a vicious delivery from Jack McGlynn was inadvertently turned past Matt Freese by Justin Haak.

Martínez tried to find an instant response for City, but he ran out of room after dribbling past the goalkeeper at a narrow angle.

Houston almost made it two just before halftime after Thiago Martins thought he had been fouled by Gabriel. The referee did not agree, giving Segal a 1v1, but Freese stood tall to deny the former New York City FC striker.

Houston defender Felipe Andrade then came close with a header in first-half stoppage time that drifted just wide of the target.

Second Half

The second half saw no changes for either team, as the rain let up and darkness settled over the stadium. Houston would find a second goal early in the half through Segal, after he slammed home a rebound from close range.

In response, Aidan O’Neill fired off a shot from distance that forced a good save from goalkeeper Jonathan Bond. Hannes Wolf then went close from a free kick not long after.

In the 64th minute, Jansen turned to his bench to introduce four new faces. On came Mounsef Bakrar, Nico Cavallo, Agustín Ojeda, and Máximo Carrizo in place of Haak, Martínez, Wolf, and Moralez.

They were joined on the field by Keaton Parks in the 74th minute, as the midfielder came on to replace Shore. In the 88th minute, captain Thiago Martins rose highest at a corner and powered a header just wide of the near post.

Houston was awarded a penalty in stoppage time after Cavallo was deemed to have committed a foul inside the area. Segal stepped up and converted the spot kick confidently. That was the last act of note on the night, confirming a disappointing 3-0 defeat for City at home.

New York City FC recorded an impressive 3-1 comeback victory over the Chicago Fire at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. Despite falling behind to a long-range strike from Phillip Zinckernagel in the first half, City responded after Chicago’s Brian Gutiérrez was sent off in the 31st minute. Second-half goals from Mounsef Bakrar, Hannes Wolf, and Alonso Martínez—via the penalty spot—followed, with Djé D’Avila also seeing red late on.

New York City FC entertained the Chicago Fire on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

The Boys in Blue were hoping to build on an impressive Hudson River Derby victory last time out. Head Coach Pascal Jansen made one enforced change to the team that beat the Red Bulls, as Andrés Perea was replaced by Jonathan Shore.

First Half

City flew out of the blocks early, and Alonso Martínez tested Chris Brady within the opening five minutes. It was one of a string of chances for City early on that they were unable to convert.

Chicago responded in the 10th minute through Brian Gutiérrez, but his effort was blocked well by Thiago Martins.

Martínez then managed to test Brady again after a clever run in behind the Chicago defensive line. Unfortunately, Chicago’s shot stopper was able to deny the forward.

Despite enjoying the better of the chances early on, City fell behind in the 19th minute when Phillip Zinckernagel placed a low drive from distance past Matt Freese.

City were quick to respond, and Martínez almost equalized from close range after the ball popped out to him—his first-time effort flying over the crossbar.

The game was flipped on its head in the 31st minute when Chicago were reduced to ten men. Gutiérrez was shown a straight red card after catching Aidan O’Neill with an elbow to the face.

Hannes Wolf was presented with a great chance to level the game on the stroke of halftime, but he could not find the target when it mattered most.

Second Half

The second period saw two changes for City as Mitja Ilenič and Mounsef Bakrar replaced Tayvon Gray and Shore.

Maxi Moralez registered City’s first chance of note in the half via an audacious volleyed attempt that whistled just wide of Brady’s post.

City would find an equalizer four minutes later thanks to Bakrar. A move instigated by good play down the left involving Wolf and Justin Haak saw the latter fire in a low cross that Bakrar calmly turned home from close range.

With momentum behind them, City set about trying to break through a dogged defensive line from Chicago. With space at a premium, Birk Risa opted to take a more direct route with a shot from distance that forced Brady into a good save.

The go-ahead goal would come for City not long after thanks to a great effort from Wolf. The winger did well to recover a cross from Julián Fernández, and after engineering a yard of space, he drove inside and curled an effort low into the bottom right corner.

Chicago were by no means out of the game, however, and a dangerous cross almost allowed Hugo Cuypers a look at goal, but the Belgian failed to make clean contact.

Ojeda Impact

Jansen turned to his bench in the 79th minute to introduce Agustín Ojeda in place of Fernández.

The winger managed to make an impact just five minutes later, winning a penalty after being fouled by Djê D’Avila—who was shown a second yellow card for the challenge.

Martínez then stepped up and fired the ball into the top left corner for his eighth goal of the season.

In the wake of the goal, two further changes arrived for City as Keaton Parks and Nico Cavallo replaced Martínez and Haak. That would prove to be the last act of note, and confirmed an important 3-1 win for City at home.

The latest installment of the Hudson River Derby took center stage on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Citi Field as New York City FC hosted the Red Bulls.

The two teams entered the game with identical records so far this season ?five wins, five losses, and three ties during the MLS regular season.

Head Coach Pascal Jansen made one change to the side that drew with D.C. United midweek, as Aidan O’Neill came into midfield in place of Jonathan Shore.

First Half

The tempo was high from the off, as both teams set about trying to establish dominance early on.

After several half-chances for City, the game exploded into life in the 13th minute when Alonso Martínez opened the scoring with his 25th goal for the Club.

The Costa Rican collected a pass from Justin Haak and, after turning, produced a ferocious effort from distance that flew past Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel.

He was handed a great chance to make it two not long after, when Julián Fernández lofted a ball over the top.

Martínez was forced to wrestle with the attentions of one defender as he made his way toward goal, with his eventual shot saved by Coronel.

The Red Bulls then registered their first look at goal through Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. The forward found space on the right-hand side of the area but saw his shot hit the side netting.

City came close to doubling their lead on several occasions heading into halftime, including one effort from Hannes Wolf that was cleared off the line.

Second Half

The second period saw no changes for either side, as the Red Bulls registered the first chance of the half through Dennis Gjengaar. The Norwegian’s shot curled toward goal but was comfortably saved by Matt Freese.

Instead, it would be City that found the next goal of the game, through Maxi Moralez. Arriving after a mistake by Coronel was pounced on by Martínez; he squared it to Moralez, who then showed tremendous composure to slot the ball home.

At the hour mark, Jansen turned to his bench for the first time to introduce three changes. Mitja Ilenič, Agustín Ojeda, and Jonathan Shore came on for Perea, Fernández, and Tayvon Gray.

In the 70th minute, a Red Bulls corner saw the ball pop loose to Cameron Harper, but his effort hit the side netting. He was handed another chance minutes later but again failed to convert.

City made further changes in the 76th minute, as Birk Risa and Hannes Wolf departed and were replaced by Mounsef Bakrar and Nico Cavallo.

As the half wore on, City began to exert greater control over the contest. The Red Bulls managed a half-chance through Wikelman Carmona as stoppage time approached, but he missed the target.

City nearly made it 3-0 in stoppage time when Martínez crashed a second long-range effort off the crossbar. That would prove to be the final notable action of the night, sealing an important 2-0 win for City in the Hudson River Derby.

A fine evening in the Bronx awaited New York City FC as they hosted CF Montréal at Yankee Stadium.

City were keen to extend their winning run in MLS to three games, while Montréal were still searching for their first win of the regular season.

Head Coach Pascal Jansen handed a New York City FC debut to new signing Aidan O’Neill, fresh off his arrival from Standard de Liège late last month.

First Half

City started fast, and that saw Alonso Martínez register an early look at goal after three minutes—his shot from outside the box comfortably saved by Jonathan Sirois.

The Costa Rican came close to breaking the deadlock in the 15th minute after racing from inside his own half to fashion a 1v1 opportunity. Sirois did well to force Martínez wide before he fired his eventual effort off target.

In the 22nd minute, Freese produced a fantastic stop to deny Giacomo Vrioni after the striker powered a header toward goal.

The visitors came close again when Prince Owusu picked the pocket of Justin Haak and got a shot off that Freese did well to block—Thiago Martins clearing the ball from danger.

Vrioni then broke the offside trap with a run in behind down City’s left. After cutting inside, he got off a fierce strike that required a good save from Freese.

Second Half

The start of the second period saw two changes for City as Mitja Ilenič and Agustín Ojeda replaced Tayvon Gray and Andrés Perea.

City fell behind minutes into the half after Owusu drove inside and fired a shot through two defenders and past Freese.

It was almost two minutes later when a mishit cross from Nathan Saliba looped over Freese and crashed against the crossbar.

In response, a good run down the left from Ojeda allowed him to send in a dangerous low cross that skidded through the six-yard box.

Jansen made his second set of changes just after the hour mark as Strahinja Tanasijević and Hannes Wolf replaced O’Neill and Julián Fernández.

A final change of the night saw Mounsef Bakrar replace Nico Cavallo as City pushed hard for an equalizer. City continued to press for a way back into the game, but standing in their way was a compact and dogged Montréal side.

On a pleasant spring evening, New York City FC entered the storied Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, facing the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in a Round of 32 match shaped by the tournament’s unique character.

First Half

After a fast start from both teams, the visitors almost took the lead in the 19th minute through Mounsef Bakrar.

The Algerian striker did well to flick the ball up for himself with his first touch before volleying an effort at goal that required a strong save from Eric Dick.

The hosts were able to produce several dangerous half-chances during the opening period but struggled to test Tomás Romero in goal.

As halftime neared, Andrés Perea ventured forward. The midfielder was able to connect with a cross from the right but couldn’t keep his effort under the bar.

At the other end, Romero was called into action after Jorge Garcia’s bouncing strike almost found its way into the bottom corner.

Second Half

The second half saw one change for City as Julián Fernández replaced Birk Risa in a move that saw Justin Haak drop into defense.

City almost took the lead early in the second half after a clipped cross from Tayvon Gray nearly looped over Pittsburgh’s goalkeeper—a desperate hand clawing the ball away.

The Pittsburgh goal was now facing sustained pressure, and next it was the turn of Fernández to get an effort off that was well saved by Dick.

In the 63rd minute, Danny Griffin latched onto a pass on the right side of the box and fired off a shot that Romero did well to smother behind for a corner.

A turnover in the final third allowed Bakrar to feed Hannes Wolf in just inside the penalty area. The Austrian did well to set up the shot, but dragged his effort just wide of the post.

City were reduced to ten men in the 78th minute after Strahinja Tanasijević was deemed to have fouled Bradley Sample—his position as the last man seeing him depart the game early.

Jansen opted to make two changes in the minutes that followed as Seymour Reid and Max Murray replaced Perea and Wolf—Murray making his competitive debut for New York City FC. City then almost took the lead after Agustín Ojeda’s rasping drive from distance crashed against the crossbar.

The winger then turned provider after his lung-bursting run down the right finished with a low cross to Fernández at the back post. Unfortunately, the winger could not turn the ball into the net from close range.

Drew Baiera then entered the game for Nico Cavallo in injury time. A dramatic end to the game saw Beto Ydrach head Pittsburgh infront. That would prove decisive and hand the hosts a 1-0 win on the night.

It was a galaxy not so far away on Sunday as New York City FC celebrated Star Wars Day by hosting FC Cincinnati at Citi Field.

The home side was keen to record back-to-back wins, while Cincinnati were aiming to hold onto their position at the top of the Eastern Conference.

Head Coach Pascal Jansen made two changes to the team that started against Toronto FC last time out, as Andrés Perea and Julián Fernández replaced Kevin O’Toole and Agustín Ojeda.

First Half

Fernández justified his selection inside the opening ten minutes by giving City the lead after the ball popped up on the edge of the box and the Argentine slammed a side-footed finish past Roman Celentano.

Things got even better for City a few minutes later when Alonso Martínez earned a penalty. The Costa Rican latched onto a well-weighted through ball from Thiago Martins.

Unfortunately for City, Martínez failed to convert after seeing his effort crash off the post and away from goal.

City didn’t dwell on that disappointment, however, and almost made it two in the 18th minute after Maxi Moralez pounced on a loose ball out wide and played Perea through on goal.

The midfielder did his best to take a touch and convert, but failed to keep his poked effort on target.

City were then forced into a first-half change after Keaton Parks pulled up with an injury, with Birk Risa replacing him.

Minutes later, Martínez tested Celentano from distance with a rasping shot that forced a good save from the goalkeeper.

Cincinnati were eager to go in level at halftime, and a freekick on the right allowed Lucas Orellano to bend a shot at goal that went wide of the far post.

Second Half

The second period saw Cincinnati start the brighter of the two teams. That early pressure allowed Gerardo Valenzuela to fire off a vicious shot that Matt Freese did well to stop.

A second change for City arrived just after the 50-minute mark as Perea was replaced by Nico Cavallo.

Martínez was desperate to add his name to the scoresheet and was handed a golden opportunity on the hour mark after a great cross from Tayvon Gray. Unfortunately, he could not keep his header down and saw it fly over the bar.

City’s quest to secure a second goal nearly saw Hannes Wolf find the net in the 78th minute, but he saw his effort blocked.

It was a similar story for Cincinnati barely sixty seconds later when Valenzuela found himself in space. His shot from a tight angle was dangerous but was well blocked by Freese.

Jansen turned to his bench for the final time in the 85th minute to introduce Ojeda and Mounsef Bakrar in place of Martínez and Fernández.

A heavy downpour had blanketed much of the second half, and after some pinball in the box, Freese was called into action to tip away a ball that had deflected off the back of Gray. He then raced off his line to gather up the loose ball.

New York City FC were on their travels Saturday as they took on Toronto FC at BMO Field.

City were looking to bounce back from defeat in their last outing against New England Revolution, while Toronto were eager to make it back-to-back wins after beating Real Salt Lake.

Head Coach Pascal Jansen made two changes to the team that took on the Revs, as Keaton Parks and Tayvon Gray replaced Mounsef Bakrar and Mitja Ilenič.

First Half

The hosts created the first chance of the afternoon after three minutes—Charlie Sharp heading over from close range.

City responded with a header of their own seven minutes later through Keaton Parks, but he also struggled to keep the effort on target.

Next it would be Alonso Martínez that tested Toronto’s goal, with a shot in the 17th minute that Sean Johnson saved.

Sharp was Toronto’s main attacking outlet early on, and the 25th minute saw him get a shot off that missed the target.

As the clock ticked past the half-hour mark Federico Bernardeschi became a more central figure, firing off two shots that were blocked by a combination of Justin Haak and Jonathan Shore.

City were eager to go in a goal up, and Hannes Wolf had a great chance to give City the lead when he found a dangerous pocket of space just inside the area. His shot was deflected behind for a corner.

Second Half

The second half saw both teams renew their attempts to find an opener, as City came close in the 54th minute through Wolf—his effort blocked by Kosi Thompson.

In response, TFC defender Kevin Long headed an effort toward goal that required an intervention from Justin Haak to keep the scores level.

City were then handed a perfect chance to break the deadlock in the 64th minute after Martínez earned a penalty. He dusted himself down and confidently dispatched the strike past Sean Johnson.

Jansen opted to make two changes in the wake of the goal as Julián Fernández and Nico Cavallo replaced Kevin O’Toole and Agustín Ojeda.

Toronto were by no means out of things, however, as Matt Freese was called into action after a dangerous freekick from the left missed everybody and skipped up in front of City’s shot-stopper, who grabbed it at the second attempt.

Fernández then raced down the other end and fired off a venomous drive that whistled past the near post.

City’s second set of changes came in the 78th minute as Maxi Moralez and Shore were replaced by Birk Risa and Andrés Perea.

A fast break from City minutes later saw them work the ball forward before Fernández found Wolf from close range—his shot well-blocked by Johnson.

Toronto’s pursuit of an equalizer saw Matty Longstaff clip in a dangerous cross in injury time that required Gray to clear it behind for a corner.

City’s final change of the afternoon saw Mounsef Bakrar replace Martínez, but not before the Costa Rican sprang the offside trap and attempted to round Johnson—Toronto’s shot-stopper able to get a glove on the ball and dispossess him.

In the end, Martínez’s penalty proved the difference and was enough to secure a first road win of the campaign for City.

New York City FC were back on the road Saturday night as they took on the New England Revolution.

Both teams came into the game fresh off 1-0 victories, with City hopeful of recording a first road win of the campaign.
Pascal Jansen made one change to the side that beat the Philadelphia Union last time out, as Mounsef Bakrar replaced Keaton Parks.

First Half

The Revs managed the first chance of the game three minutes in when Leo Campana ran in behind—Matt Freese smothering the shot well.

Campana was handed another chance to break the deadlock in the 12th minute, and would have scored but for a great block from Justin Haak.

City would respond with a shot of their own four minutes later. Alonso Martínez managed to get an effort off from distance that whistled just past the post.

Half chances continued to present themselves for both sides, but the game remained scoreless as the half hour mark came and went.
The Revs would snatch the lead just before half time through Campana. The striker’s low shot took a wicked deflection off Thiago Martins and skipped over Freese.

Second Half

Jansen opted to make one change ahead of the second half as Parks replaced Agustín Ojeda in midfield.

Unfortunately, City’s task was made harder in the 48th minute when Carles Gil’s in-swinging cross allowed Ignatius Ganago to convert from close range.

The visitors set about trying to find a route back into the game and that saw Hannes Wolf and Maxi Moralez register shots at goal in quick succession—neither able to produce the elusive goal required.

Jansen made a triple change just after the hour mark as Andrés Perea, Tayvon Gray, and Julián Fernández replaced Bakrar, Mitja Ilenić, and Jonathan Shore.

Perea almost found the scoresheet after rising high to meet a cross, but was unable to keep his header on target.

A final change for City came in the 75th minute as Nico Cavallo replaced Kevin O’Toole. Martínez fashioned a half chance for himself in the 85th minute after collecting a loose ball, but saw his effort comfortably saved.

ray then came close after a cross from Parks found him free at the back post, with his bouncing effort forcing a good save from Aljaz Ivacic.

City produced several more looks at goal during stoppage time, but was unable to find the scoresheet. That forced them to settle for a 2-0 defeat on the road.
