The U.S. Men’s National Team bounced back from a first-half deficit, but Canada struck again after intermission to send the Americans to a 2-1 defeat in Sunday’s Concacaf Nations League third-place game in Los Angeles.

U.S.Men's national team in action agaisnt Canada in the Nations League

Striker Patrick Agyemang pulled the USA level eight minutes after Canada’s opener, but Lille marksman Jonathan David scored the winner on a 59th-minute curler. Defeat at SoFi Stadium consigned the hosts to fourth place in the 2024-25 Nations League (CNL) and while Canada claimed the bronze medal, the Americans left empty handed after winning each of the competition’s first three editions (2021, ?3 and ?4).

U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino made five changes to the lineup that started the 1-0 CNL semifinal loss to Panama three days earlier. Cameron Carter-Vickers and Mark McKenzie comprised the new center back pairing in front of mainstay Matt Turner, while Columbus Crew defender Max Arfsten was inserted on the left (holdover Joe Scally shifted right).

The midfield was anchored by Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie, who became the third active USMNT player to earn 60 caps. Diego Luna was introduced on the left, pushing Tim Weah right, and Christian Pulisic captained the side from the No. 10 position. Up top, Charlotte FC’s Agyemang got the nod after entering in relief against Panama.

First Half

Arfsten, 23, and Luna, 21, made their competitive debut while Agyemang, 24, started in tournament play for the first time. The US was looking to play the ball into Agyemang early, and the 6-foot-4 target man was involved in a key play in the opening moments, as his inadvertent sixth-minute collision with Canada captain Alphonso Davies resulted in the wobbly Bayern Munich star’s exit in the 12th.

Neither team managed a shot on target in the opening 26 minutes, but Canada grabbed the lead in the 27th. A cross from Canada’s Ali Ahmed was met by David and McKenzie, and the ball fell to Tani Oluwaseyi, who was standing alone at the edge of the six-yard box. Turner had no chance on the shot to his left as Oluwaseyi, who plays for Minnesota United, notched his first international goal.

The USMNT’s youngsters responded quickly. A 35th-minute run by Weah, who’d moved to the left flank toward the heart of the Canadian defense concluded with a slick through ball to Luna. The Real Salt Lake playmaker demonstrated impressive technique and composure as he stopped, drew a defender toward him then slipped a short pass to Agyemang, who had slowed his run near the penalty spot. Agyemang’s first-time, right-footed finish was his third goal in just four senior international matches.

Second Half

Pochettino replaced Scally with LA native Marlon Fossey after halftime. Canada began the second period on the front foot and after a couple close calls and two penalty appeals, coach Jesse Marsch was ejected by referee Katia Itzel García in the 54th minute. Canada’s pressure continued and David, the subject of the second appeal, lifted the Canadians into the lead in the 59th. He turned on a feed from Ahmed and curled an exquisite, 14-yard shot past Turner and inside the left post. David is Canada’s all-time leading goal scorer with 32.

Now trailing, Pochettino sent on Gio Reyna, Yunus Musah and Tanner Tessman and withdrew Pulisic, Adams and McKennie in the 69th. It was Reyna’s first USMNT appearance since last summer’s Copa América. Striker Brian White then replaced Agyemang nine minutes later. The USA’s best chance at an equalizer came in the 85th, when McKenzie knocked a header toward the left post. Canada goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair then got just enough of an opportunistic attempt by the enterprising Luna. White chested down a corner kick shortly thereafter but couldn’t get his foot to the ball, and Arfsten bent a shot just wide of the right post during stoppage time.

Canada outshot the USA, 8-5, and put four shots on frame to the hosts?two. Although the Americans won the possession battle, 59.6% to 40.4%, Canada spent more time in its attacking third.

This was the eighth bronze-medal match in USMNT history. Previously, it successfully secured third place at the 1992 and 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup, as well as the 1996 and 2003 Concacaf Gold Cup. It lost out on bronze at the 1995 and 2016 Copa América, and the 2015 Gold Cup.

The Americans carried most of the play at SoFi Stadium, but Panama scored deep into second-half stoppage time to consign the hosts to the bronze medal match. Substitute forward Cecilio Waterman did the damage, converting his side’s only on-target shot of the match in the fourth minute of second half stoppage time.

The USMNT will remain in Los Angeles and play the loser of Thursday’s second semifinal—Canada or Mexico—for third place on March 23 (6 p.m. ET; Paramount+, Univision). Panama will vie for its first continental honor later that evening.

Seeking to become the first senior men’s team, club or country, to win a Concacaf competition four straight times, the U.S. ran up against Panama’s recent run of success in the series between the teams. Under coach Thomas Christiansen, Los Canaleros knocked the USA out of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup (on penalties in the semifinal) and then dealt their rivals a crippling defeat during the group stage of the 2024 Copa América.

First Half

The USA began the match with a focus on stretching an opponent committed to clogging the middle of the field. The versatile Yunus Musah, who previously had played forward for coach Mauricio Pochettino, lined up as a hybrid right back-winger, while Tim Weah offered width on the left. Weston McKennie was marauding through the right channel, Christian Pulisic was lurking on the left and Josh Sargent, who’s been lighting up the English Championship, led the line.

Tyler Adams and Tanner Tessman anchored the midfield in front of center backs Tim Ream and Chris Richards, left back Joe Scally and goalkeeper Matt Turner, who earned his 50th cap.

Thursday’s game was the first featuring a full U.S. squad in four months (the January camp matches fell outside a FIFA window), and Panama looked relatively comfortable early as the hosts tried to find their footing.

The USA finally started to click around 20 minutes in, as Sargent and McKennie each came close to netting the opener. Sargent took a first-time shot that struck defender Edgardo Fariña and then the right post, and McKennie sent a subsequent header into the arms of goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera. Sargent then rifled the ball past Mosquera in the 24th, but Weah was offside in the buildup. The field was starting to tilt, but Los Canaleros survived, re-established their shape and forced the Americans to do just enough defending to keep the game on level terms.

Second Half

Pochettino asked Pulisic and McKennie to switch sides after intermission and the USA earned three early corner kicks in quick succession. Weah then tested Mosquera from outside the penalty area in the 53rd, as American pressure increased. January camp graduates Patrick Agyemang and Jack McGlynn relieved Sargent and Tessman in the 68th, and Panama’s leading scorer, José Fajardo, was replaced by Waterman a couple minutes later.

The attacking profile of both teams had evolved, and Agyemang nearly broke the deadlock after running onto a through ball from McKennie in the 82nd minute. The Charlotte FC striker did well to hold off a defender and get a shot off, but Mosquera dove left and made the play. Agyemang then chopped a feed from Pulisic over the crossbar five minutes later, and McKennie forced another save from Mosquera as the 90 minutes elapsed.

Every statistical metric tilted heavily toward the hosts and a goal seemed inevitable for a while, but as extra time approached, Panama somehow scored it. Shortly after another U.S. corner kick, its ninth, Los Canaleros took hold of the ball beyond the top of the American penalty area. Adalberto Carrasquilla knocked a smart pass wide right to Waterman, and the 33-year-old blasted a low, rolling shot past a diving Turner and inside the left post.

The USA outshot Panama,12-3—putting five on target—earned nine corner kicks to the visitors?three and enjoyed two-thirds of the possession. But it was the resilient visitors who found the breakthrough.

An exquisite first-half link-up between striker Brian White and a bloodied Diego Luna and a triumphant return by goalkeeper Zack Steffen helped spark the U.S. Men’s National Team to a hard-fought 3-0 shutout win over Costa Rica in Wednesday’s friendly in Orlando, Fla.    ?/p>

Caden Clark and Patrick Agyemang added second-half goals and the Americans celebrated the conclusion of a successful January camp before?3,580 fans at Inter&Co Stadium. It was their second victory in four days. The USA defeated Venezuela, 3-1, on Jan. 18 at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. ?/p>

The USMNT is now 20W-17L-6D all-time against Costa Rica (20W-6L-4D on home soil), and 5W-1L-0D under head coach Mauricio Pochettino. ?/p>

As expected in a camp with a focus on player evaluation, Pochettino rotated his lineup considerably. Miles Robinson (playing right back instead of centrally), midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi and winger Brian Gutiérrez were the only holdovers from the group that started against Venezuela.  ?/p>

Steffen earned his first cap since the World Cup qualifying finale in Costa Rica in March 2022, while captain Tim Ream and Walker Zimmerman partnered in central defense for the first time since the subsequent round-of-16 loss to the Netherlands in Qatar. ?/p>

Emeka Eneli and winger Indiana Vassilev each earned their first USMNT starts. Left back DeJuan Jones and White filled out Pochettino’s XI. ?/p>

Playing for the first time under former Mexico manager Miguel Herrera, Costa Rica fielded four international debutants. Its most seasoned starter was goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado (25 caps), who faced the USA in 2019 and 2020 friendlies and then relieved Keylor Navas toward the end of that March 2022 qualifier. ?/p>

First Half

Costa Rica was more assertive just after kickoff and earned three corner kicks in the opening five minutes, but Steffen and the USA held firm and gradually grew into the game. Gutiérrez had the first good U.S. chance, hitting the side netting from close range following a spell of possession in the 13th. ?/p>

The ascendant Americans appeared to suffer a setback when Luna, the playmaker, was forced to the sideline after taking an inadvertent elbow from Costa Rica’s Creichel Pérez. But Luna re-entered the match after several minutes of treatment, wearing a new white jersey and cotton up both nostrils. Seconds later, the Real Salt Lake sparkplug set up White’s opener. ?/p>

Luna received a pass at midfield from Jones, advanced about 20 yards and then hit a through ball that split three Tico defenders. White took one touch into the penalty area and sent a low, left-footed shot back toward the inside-right netting. The 21st-minute tally was White’s first USMNT goal, and at age 28 he became the oldest player to open his international account since Matt Besler (29 years, 204 days) in September 2016.

White nearly had a second in the 27th, but Alvarado cleared a low bid from the Vancouver Whitecaps?marksman off the goal line. Steffen then made his mark in the 37th, leaping high and to his left to tip a well-hit, dipping shot from Costa Rica’s Alejandro Bran over the crossbar. The lively, wide-open half ended with an excellent recovery from Robinson, who closed down a threatening Josimar Méndez in stoppage time. ?/p>

Second Half

Pochettino sent on midfielder Jack McGlynn, playmaker Matko Miljevic and Clark after halftime. McGlynn and Miljevic had a goal and an assist each against Venezuela, and they were back orchestrating the U.S. attack early in the second period. Miljevic set up White for a promising chance in the 53rd, but he pulled his shot left of the target. ?/p>

Steffen then authored another spectacular save in the 56th, diving to his left and parrying a goal-bound shot from substitute Allan Cruz, a former FC Cincinnati midfielder.  ?/p>

Frequent substitutions and frequent whistles impacted the flow of the second half (the friendly featured five yellow cards) and in the 77th, Eneli’s alert and aggressive play paid dividends. Operating in the left channel, the Real Salt Lake midfielder quickly recovered the ball from Costa Rica’s Bran and found Clark at the top of the penalty area. The CF Montréal attacker rifled home a first-time shot for his first USMNT goal. ?/p>

Jones and Agyemang then teamed up for an exclamation point in the 90th. Jones curled a long, beautiful ball with the outside of his foot into Agyemang’s path, and the Charlotte FC striker pounded a shot past substitute Costa Rican goalkeeper Anthony Walker from an acute angle. Agyemang, who replaced White 15 minutes earlier, had also scored against Venezuela.  ?/p>

Steffen made three saves to claim his 12th career shutout and Michelob Ultra Man of the Match honors.

Pochettino made the most of his first January camp, giving eight players their USMNT debuts and re-integrating several others while winning both games. He got a look at 19 different starters across the two matches, and five players scored their first international goals. ?/p>

A trio of impressive goals from two debutants and an Olympian staked a young U.S. Men’s National team to a resounding 3-1 win over Venezuela in Saturday’s friendly in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The USA opened its annual January camp with a confident and decisive performance before 18,008 fans at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium. Eight Americans earned their first cap, and coach Mauricio Pochettino got a look at several prospects and rising stars while earning a fourth victory in his fifth match in charge. Midfielder Jack McGlynn (an Olympian with one previous senior appearance) and forwards Patrick Agyemang and Matko Miljevic (the debutants), each scored their first USMNT goal.

This month’s camp will conclude in Orlando with a Jan. 22 match against Concacaf rival Costa Rica at Inter&Co Stadium. Kickoff time is 7 p.m. ET and the broadcast will be available on TNT, TruTV, Universo, Max, Peacock and Fútbol de Primera radio.

Since the start of the 2002 World Cup cycle, 30 men who earned their first or second USMNT cap during a winter camp went on to make a World Cup squad. Pochettino embraced January camp’s purpose and potential in Fort Lauderdale, starting eight first or second timers against Venezuela.

Goalkeeper Patrick Schulte, a 2024 Olympian and a 2023 MLS champion with the Columbus Crew, earned his third USMNT nod and backstopped a starting XI that featured a half dozen debutants: Agyemang, Miljevic (a Miami native), wingers Caden Clark and Brian Gutiérrez, left back Max Arfsten and center back George Campbell.

Nineteen-year-old midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi, playing on his home turf, and McGlynn earned their second caps, while veterans Miles Robinson (the captain) and Shaq Moore offered some seasoning in defense.

Venezuela’s lineup was slightly more experienced. Four international debutants were scattered through an XI anchored by 36-year-old defender Roberto Rosales (96 caps) and goalkeeper Wuilker Feríñez (41 caps), who earned the shutout in Venezuela’s 3-0 defeat of the USMNT in a June 2019 friendly in Cincinnati.

First Half

Feríñez, who returned to hometown club Caracas FC from France’s Lens last year, showed his savvy in the opening moments. The USA earned a penalty kick when Agyemang was bundled over in the box by Venezuela’s Daniel Pereira. Miljevic stepped to the spot for the hosts, but Feríñez read the third-minute shot perfectly and dropped to his left to make the save.

The disappointment didn’t last long for the Americans, who rediscovered their footing quickly and demonstrated an ability to build through midfield and threaten on the counter during the first quarter hour. The U.S. continued to maintain an advantage in first-half possession but failed to find its way through, while La Vinotinto were left to test Schulte from long distance.

The visitors?shots didn’t fall, but McGlynn’s did. In the 37th, the USA did well to win back possession after a turnover in the Venezuelan end, and Moore drew the defense toward him as he dribbled in from the right. The ball bounced to Clark, who cut it inside to McGlynn. The 21-year-old Philadelphia Union midfielder took one touch and unleashed a 30-yard, left-footed blast that beat Feríñez at the right post.

The gates had opened. Less than two minutes later, Agyemang had doubled the lead. The Charlotte FC striker ran onto a clearance that had bounced off Miljevic and raced toward the Venezuela net. He timed his shot perfectly and beat Feríñez as the netminder left his line. The Americans were buzzing and had several more good looks before halftime. Venezuela’s Pereira, who plays for Austin FC, cleared the ball off his goal line in the 42nd.

Second Half

The U.S. onslaught continued after intermission. Feríñez denied Miljevic again in the 52nd, this time on a smart toe-poke that followed some excellent American interplay. He then used his knee to block a goal-bound header from Robinson.

Miljevic finally got his goal in the 64th. The lone non-MLS player on the U.S. roster?Miljevic just signed for Buenos Aires club Huracán—intercepted a pass in his own half, deftly dribbled through two Venezuelans, crossed midfield and then sent McGlynn through on the left. McGlynn lofted the ball back toward the penalty area, where Miljevic brought it down and rifled a low shot to the goalkeeper’s right.

Pochettino made a rash of substitutions in the 65th, giving USMNT debuts to Real Salt Lake midfielder Emeka Eneli and St. Louis City forward Indiana Vassilev. La Vinotinto then pulled a goal back in the 68th as substitute midfielder Jorge Yriarte scored on his international debut, cleanly heading home a corner kick.

The young Americans calmly saw the game out (and nearly added a fourth through substitute Brian White), lifting the USMNT’s overall record against 47th-ranked Venezuela to 4W-1L-2D. The USA is now 2W-0L-0D at Chase Stadium and 9W-12L-8D all-time in South Florida.

USMNT, England or Brazil could be good options.

Who will grant Pep Guardiola his wish?]]>
pep guardiola with maps of england and brazil

Pep Guardiola is one of the most decorated coaches to have ever graced a dugout, with there seemingly little left for him to achieve. He is, however, a man that works to the most exacting of standards and one that is seemingly incapable of dialling intensity levels down from anything other than full blast.

Guardiola has mastered the art of ignoring the past and keeping collective focus locked on the present and future. For now, that means turning the tide at Manchester City.

Manchester Derby

A derby date is next on the agenda for the history-making Premier League champions, with a positive showing being demanded against old adversaries.

Despite enduring an uncharacteristic wobble, Man City vs Man United odds still have the Blues as 4/7 favourites to claim three points and local bragging rights when locking horns with local rivals.

That is because United have been enduring issues of their own, making it difficult for football betting tips to side with them in any contest that involves Guardiola and a relentless trophy-winning machine from the Etihad Stadium.

City are delighted to have seen their charismatic boss commit to a contract extension, keeping him in his current surroundings until 2026.

Questions of Guardiola’s future are never far away, though, and the rumour mill will start ticking over again before too long.

The Catalan tactician has never previously been one to stick around for long in any given position ?certainly not for more than a decade.

He will pass that mark with City, barring any wild sack calls, and appears to still have plenty of challenges left in him.

Guardiola has admitted in the past that he would like to try his luck in a different form of management, saying: “A national team. I would like to train a national team for a World Cup or a European Championship. I don’t know who would want me!?/p>

The list of interested parties would be longer than Guardiola’s impressive roll of honour if he were to become available.

He knows as much and can rest assured that there will be a job for him somewhere once the day comes to sever ties with City.

Who, though, will grant his wish and open a door into the international arena?

There has been talk of England being keen, while links to Brazil remain for a man that has always spoken fondly about that part of the world.

International Appeal

The USMNT would also like to think that they could come into the mix if Guardiola were to start sounding out suitors.

Their stock is on the rise, with Mauricio Pochettino now calling the shots, and another household name will be expected once another changing of the guard takes place.

Chasing the American dream holds obvious appeal, with Lionel Messi among those to have trodden that career path in recent times.

Guardiola may decide to do likewise, but only after a fire that continues to burn brightly in Manchester begins to show signs of fizzling out.USMNT Beat Panama In Coach Pochettino Debut

The USMNT advanced to the CONCACAF Nations League semi-final with a convincing 4-2 win over Jamaica in the quarter-final second leg at CITYPark in Missouri.

USA 4 Jamaica 2 (USA win 5-2 on agg)

Report by USSoccer.com

A commanding attacking performance highlighted by two goals from Christian Pulisic and a pair of assists from Weston McKennie lifted the U.S. Men’s National Team to a 4-2 win over Jamaica in Monday’s second leg of the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinals in St. Louis. The Americans claimed the two-game series, 5-2, on aggregate and sealed qualification to both the Nations League Finals in March and next summer’s Concacaf Gold Cup, the continental championship tournament.

Following a rough and rugged 1-0 win in the Nov. 14 opener in the Jamaican capital of Kingston, the USA attacked with panache and precision before a crowd of 21,080 at St. Louis City’s CITYPARK. Pulisic scored in the 13th and 33rd minutes off gorgeous feeds from McKennie and Ricardo Pepi added the third shortly before halftime. Weah then marked his USMNT return with an emphatic fourth, in between second-half strikes from Jamaica’s Demarai Gray.

The victory was the USMNT’s third in four matches under coach Mauricio Pochettino, who managed his first home competitive international in one of American soccer’s historic hotbeds.

Pochettino made one personnel change and one key tactical change to his lineup for Monday’s second leg.

Johnny Cardoso’s injury in the opener made room for the return of Weah, who made his debut under the new manager after returning from injury and suspension. The tactical wrinkle was Pulisic’s shift to the central playmaking role beneath Pepi. Pochettino pulled McKennie back to fill Cardoso’s midfield spot beside Tanner Tessman, brought Pulisic inside and put Weah on the left wing. Yunus Musah remained on the right while the back four of Antonee Robinson, Tim Ream, Mark McKenzie and Joe Scally was deployed in front of goalkeeper Matt Turner for the third time in four games.

Robinson earned his 50th cap while St. Louis native Ream wore the captain’s armband for the fourth time in Pochettino’s four matches in charge.

First Half

The hosts opened the contest with almost three minutes of uninterrupted possession, which ended with a slick give-and-go between Weah and Robinson and then a blast from Weah that struck the left post. The Reggae Boyz appeared willing to cede the midfield, and the Americans looked comfortable passing, moving and probing for an opening. They found one in the 13th minute, shortly after Jamaica had finally committed some manpower to the attack.

Offered an opportunity to search for space behind Jamaica’s compact formation for the first time, the Americans launched a devastating counter that began with an outlet to Pulisic, who then found Weah on the left. He switched the ball to McKennie, his Juventus teammate, and McKennie then picked out Pulisic with a perfect, curving cross from the right. Pulisic beat Jamaica’s Andre Blake to the ball and finished inside the right post.

Twenty minutes later, Pulisic and McKennie unlocked the Reggae Boyz again. Tessman made the key pass, sending a ball from the midfield circle toward the right corner that McKennie was able to run down. He cut a feed back toward the top of the 18-yard box, which Tessman dummied brilliantly for Pulisic. His shot deflected off Jamaica’s Di’Shon Bernard and past a helpless Blake. Pulisic’s 33rd USMNT goal was also his team-leading fifth of 2024.

Pepi appeared to put the series out of reach in the 43rd minute. He pressured Blake into a poor clearance that was controlled by Robinson and Weah on the left. Robinson found Pepi at the top of the penalty area, and the in-form striker turned deftly on the ball and laced a low, 20-yard shot just beyond the diving Blake and inside the right post. It was Pepi’s third goal in his three appearances under Pochettino (he notched the only goal in the quarterfinal opener in Kingston). He also has six for PSV Eindhoven this fall.

Second Half

The three-goal halftime margin sparked a wild, wide-open second period as Jamaica threw bodies forward, refusing to go quietly. Gray, who had his penalty kick saved by Turner in the opener, got a measure of revenge in the 53rd minute with a skillful, jumping volley that beat the U.S. goalkeeper. The USA answered three minutes later, restoring its three-goal aggregate advantage following some nice build-up play, a cross from Musah and a right-footed rocket from Weah. Weah’s seventh USMNT goal was his first in official competition since the go-ahead strike against Wales in the 2022 World Cup opener in Qatar.

Gray wasn’t done, however. The former Leicester City, Bayer Leverkusen and Everton player, who’s now at Saudi Arabia’s Al Ettifaq, tallied his second of the night off a 68th-minute rebound. Turner made the save on a shot from Renaldo Cephas, but the goalie parried the ball off Robinson and into Gray’s path.

Time was running out on the Reggae Boyz and the Americans had the goals they needed, but they continued to create chances as rain became heavier at CITYPARK. Musah and substitute striker Brandon Vazquez had promising chances just miss the target in the latter stages. There wouldn’t be a fifth, but the four goals was the most in a single game by the USMNT in more than a year, since a 4-0 friendly win over Ghana on Oct. 17, 2023.

The USA raised its record in the all-time series with Jamaica to 22W-3L-10D, and its current unbeaten run since losing a 2019 friendly lengthened to 7W-0L-2D. The victory also boosted the USA to .500 for the year—the Americans finished an eventful 2024 at 6W-6L-2D. Now the stage is set for 2025.

First Half

The Reggae Boyz quickly established the terms of engagement ?they would press when able (using an uneven playing surface to their advantage), but otherwise would defend with five across the back and then try to bypass the U.S. midfield in transition.

But the 18th-ranked Americans quickly found an answer. After a disjointed first few minutes, the visitors pulled ahead in the fifth on a brilliant link-up between Pulisic and Pepi. Pulisic and Cardoso set the table with a brisk exchange of passes and as the Reggae Boyz drifted toward Pulisic, they took their eyes off Pepi. Pulisic, who earned his 75th international appearance tonight, accelerated into the space between the midfielders and defense and then played Pepi through with a perfectly weighted pass. Pepi knocked the ball into the penalty area and then sent a right-footed shot off the inside of the left post and in.

It was Pepi’s 12th USMNT goal, his second of 2024 (in 10 games), his third against Jamaica and his second under Pochettino ?he also scored in the Panama friendly.

Both Robinson and Pulisic missed subsequent chances before Jamaica earned a golden opportunity to equalize. Turner was whistled for a 12th-minute foul on Shamar Nicholson after the Spartak Moscow striker had dribbled past McKenzie and Ream. Turner then made emphatic amends, lunging to his right to parry Demarai Gray’s penalty kick. The Crystal Palace keeper has saved three of the eight penalties he’s faced with the USA (two of those saves came against Jamaica).

The Americans took the lead into intermission as the pace of the game remained relatively high, but precision proved elusive for both sides within the bumpy confines of “The Office.?/p>

Second Half

After halftime, the visitors appeared more comfortable with the ball and were able to tilt the field more frequently toward Jamaica’s end. The Reggae Boyz?/em> attacking forays in the opening 15 minutes were brief, but they finally reclaimed some momentum after the hour mark. A timely, goal-mouth tackle from Musah on Jamaica’s Mason Holgate stymied a close-range chance in the 65th, and Turner got his hands to a swerving, goal-bound corner kick shortly thereafter.

Midfielder Malik Tillman had relieved an injured Cardoso midway through the first half and in the 72nd minute, Pochettino inserted striker Brandon Vazquez and midfielder Gianluca Busio for Pepi and McKennie. The match became increasingly nervy and combative as it entered the stretch run. There were frequent stoppages and seven second-half yellow cards, one of which was Holgate’s second. The USA’s best chance to double its lead came in the 83rd, but Vazquez couldn’t put enough on his first-time shot to beat Jamaica’s Andre Blake.

Playing against 10 following Holgate’s 86th-minute ejection, the Americans calmly closed out their fourth all-time win on Jamaican soil (4W-1L-6D) and just their second in a competitive match. They had beaten the Reggae Boyz in a World Cup qualifier back in 2013. The USA now leads the all-time series, 24W-3L-10D. In addition, Pochettino became just the third full-time USMNT manager to win his first competitive away game, following Bob Bradley (at Barbados in 2008) and Steve Sampson (at Trinidad & Tobago in 1996).

USMNT Lose To Rivals Mexico In Guadalajara]]>

Coach Mauricio Pochettino’s first taste of the USA-Mexico rivalry ended in defeat in Guadalajara, where the U.S. Men’s National Team fell in Tuesday’s friendly, 2-0, thanks in large part to a first-half goal and a second-half assist from El Tri veteran Raúl Jiménez.

Mexico 2 USA 0

Report by USSoccer.com

The setback at the Estadio Akron snapped the USA’s seven-game unbeaten streak (5W-0L-2D) over Mexico, its longest in the 90-year history of the rivalry. It also marked the first time the USMNT lost to El Tri on Mexican soil since 2009. When visiting, the Americans had crafted an impressive 1W-0L-3D run since winning the last south-of-the-border friendly between the sides back in 2012.

The USA now trails the all-time series 24W-37L-17D, but still holds a 5W-1L-2D advantage in the 2020s and a 17W-10L-8D lead in the 2000s.

Tuesday’s friendly concluded Pochettino’s debut window, which opened with Saturday’s 2-0 defeat of Panama in Austin, Texas. Although five players returned to their clubs following that game, Pochettino was able to field a starting XI in Guadalajara that featured only two changes. With Christian Pulisic back in Milan, Malik Tillman earned his fifth career USMNT start, playing underneath striker Josh Sargent in Pochettino’s 4-2-3-1. In defense, center back Miles Robinson relieved Mark McKenzie, who experienced tightness in his left groin prior to the start of the match. The other nine players, including captain Tim Ream, remained the same.

First Half

The Estadio Akron was packed for 17th-ranked Mexico’s first official home game in 11 months, and Ream, Yunus Musah and Antonee Robinson were the only American starters who’d ever faced El Tri away. Although the 18th-ranked USA held both its shape and its nerve during a cagey opening quarter hour, a foul about nine yards beyond the U.S. penalty area offered the hosts an opening.

Fulham’s Jiménez stepped up. The 33-year-old hadn’t played for Mexico in 11 months, but he expertly spun a perfect, 22nd-minute free kick over the U.S. wall and toward the upper-right corner of the net. Goalkeeper Matt Turner leaped to his left and was able to get a slight touch to it as the ball flew in. It was Jiménez’s 34th goal for El Tri, moving him into a tie for fifth all-time, and it sparked a stretch of Mexican momentum.

Kristoffer Lund and Club América’s Alex Zendejas replaced Antonee Robinson and Musah, respectively, after halftime. Mexico doubled its advantage before the new alignment could get settled. Jiménez was the catalyst in the 49th minute, losing possession to Ream in the penalty area but then winning it back with a well-executed tackle from behind that sent the ball to César Huerta. The Pumas forward then finished the play from 13 yards.

Pochettino inserted his other Liga MX player, Monterrey’s Brandon Vazquez, in the 63rd minute, along with Haji Wright and Tanner Tessmann. The USA’s first good scoring chance came seconds later, as Lund barely mis-timed a volley of an exquisite, deep cross from Zendejas. Vazquez then raced onto a slick through ball from Aaronson in the 79th, ripping a shot that forced an alert save from Mexico’s Luis Malagón.

Second Half

The U.S. enjoyed a steep advantage in possession during the second half, 63.3%-36.7%. Mexico saw the game out and ended up outshooting the visitors, 17-5, with all five U.S. bids coming after intermission.

USA 2 Panama 0

Report by USSoccer.com

The friendly played before a crowd of 20,239 at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, marked the auspicious start of a new era for the USMNT, which took the field under Pochettino for the first time. The renowned Argentine manager, who was appointed last month, became the fourth coach in U.S. Soccer’s modern era to win his debut match, joining Bora Milutinovic (1991), Bob Bradley (2007) and Gregg Berhalter (2019).

The victory, capped by a stoppage-time strike from native Texan Ricardo Pepi, snapped the USA’s four-game winless run as well as its two-game skid against Panama. Los Canaleroseliminated the Americans in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup semifinals on penalties, then overcame a 10-man USMNT, 2-1, during the group stage of this summer’s Copa América.

The result also lifted the USA’s record in Austin to a perfect 5-0-0, with each win coming by shutout.

First Half

Pochettino’s first starting XI included a few intriguing wrinkles, led by the tandem of 22-year-old center midfielders Gianluca Busio and Aiden Morris that anchored the USA’s 4-2-3-1. Musah, whose national team minutes had typically been spent in the middle, was higher and on the right. Christian Pulisic patrolled the left flank and Brenden Aaronson played underneath striker Josh Sargent, who started for the first time since the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Veteran center back Tim Ream captained the side and became the 10th USMNT field player to earn a cap after turning 37, and the first since Preki in 2001.

The hosts began the game at a high pace and by putting Los Canaleros under high pressure, and Pulisic and left back Antonee Robinson created a couple promising looks in the opening moments. Although the Americans held most of the ball during the first half and created four corner kicks to Panama’s one, clear scoring chances were at a premium until the closing minutes of the period.

Pulisic created the first one with a smart, 39th-minute steal in midfield and then a through ball to Aaronson, whose 18-yard blast was parried away by Panama’s Orlando Mosquera. Two minutes later, Sargent latched onto a deflected cross from Busio but ripped his eight-yard bid over the crossbar.

The ball didn’t go in, but the USA was starting to threaten and the inevitable goal came from an unlikely source.

Second Half

Despite making a considerable impact over his first 41 national team matches, Musah hadn’t scored in a U.S. jersey. But when Pulisic and Aaronson carved open the Panamanian defense in the 49th minute, Musah raced toward goal like a seasoned finisher. Pulisic’s cross from the left was knee high and Musah beat Mosquera to the ball and volleyed it home.

It was Musah’s first goal of any kind since January 2022, when he scored for Valencia in a La Liga game at Atlético Madrid. The assist was Pulisic’s seventh goal contribution (4 goals, 3 assists) in six career games against Panama.

U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner preserved the host’s advantage in the 52nd with a brilliant, one-handed save on a shot from Panama’s Yoel Bárcenas, and then a quick recovery to deny Puma Rodríguez on the rebound.

Both sides substituted heavily in the final 25 minutes, as is typical in friendlies. Panama’s best chance to equalize was missed in the 87th by substitute forward José Fajardo, who had scored the winner at the Copa América. He lunged at a deep cross that had curled behind the American center backs, but shanked his shot wide right.

A trio of U.S. reserves killed off the game in the 94th minute. Malik Tillman fed Haji Wright near the left corner of the penalty area, and his cross reached Pepi in front of goal. The PSV Eindhoven striker made no mistake with his first-time shot and notched his 11th USMNT goal.

The USA’s 2024 record improved to 4-5-2 and its advantage in the all-time series against Panama increased to 18-3-7.

That match at the Estadio Azteca proved historic, as defender Michael Orozco’s late goal lifted the U.S. to a 1-0 win and its first victory over El Tri in 25 games in Mexico.

The U.S. Men’s National Team concluded its 2024 Copa América journey with a contentious and competitive 1-0 loss to South American power Uruguay on Monday evening. The USA finished Group C play on three points (1W-2L-0D) and in third place, behind both Uruguay (3W-0L-0D; 9 pts.) and Panama (2-W-1L-0D). Only the top two sides earned passage to the tournament quarterfinals.

USA 0 Uruguay 1

Report by USSoccer.com

For a few minutes during the second half at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, the U.S. was in position to advance. But Uruguay’s Mathías Olivera netted a controversial goal off a 66th-minute set piece to take a lead the South Americans would not relinquish. Meanwhile, in Orlando, Fla., Panama took charge against Bolivia in its Group C finale. Needing two goals to climb the standings, the USA couldn’t find an answer for Uruguay’s frenetic pressure and stout defense.

Forced by Tim Weah’s red-card suspension to make at least one change to his starting lineup, head coach Gregg Berhalter opted on Monday to reinstall the midfield trio that shepherded the USA to the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup: Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah. It was Musah’s first start of the Copa América. Gio Reyna, who’d been deployed in midfield in previous group-stage games against Bolivia and Panama, moved up to left wing. Berhalter’s back four remained constant and goalkeeper Matt Turner returned to net after exiting the Panama loss with a leg contusion.

First Half

The USMNT faced a Uruguay side at full strength. Despite wins its first two games, La Celeste still wasn’t assured of a quarterfinal berth when Monday’s games kicked off. Consequently, head coach Marcelo Bielsa, who was serving a one-game suspension, fielded the same XI that started the 5-0 rout of Bolivia four days earlier.

Nevertheless, the Americans started the game brightly, showing an eagerness to win loose balls and play passes into Uruguay’s defensive third. In the 13th minute, Reyna hit a dangerous cross that goalkeeper Sergio Rochet snatched just before it reached U.S. striker Folarin Balogun, and defender Antonee Robinson put a header on target. But that rhythm would be short-lived, as tactical fouls, collisions and the referee’s whistle impacted the flow and limited scoring chances on both sides. Uruguay’s Maximiliano Araújo and Balogun both departed with injuries before intermission.

Second Half

The USA’s fortunes rose and fell in the second half. Just after the hour mark, many of the 55,460 fans in the stands at Arrowhead, as well as those in uniform, became aware that Bolivia had drawn level with Panama. At that point, a 0-0 draw with Uruguay would have been enough to send the USMNT through to the knockout stage. But a few minutes later, the 15-time Copa América champion was in front. FC Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo hit a well-placed header that forced a diving save from Turner. But La Celeste’s other center back, Olivera, reached the rebound first. It appeared Olivera might have been slightly offside when Araújo made contact, but the VAR upheld the goal after several minutes of review.

Panama scored a second in Orlando shortly thereafter, leaving the USA with no choice but to go for the come-from-behind win. Berhalter inserted attackers Josh Sargent and Haji Wright and despite spells of threatening possession and a few frantic moments in the Uruguay penalty area, the hosts couldn’t break through. Wright’s deflected shot in the 87th, which was covered up by Rochet, proved to be the most promising chance. The U.S. managed eight shots overall, with three on target.

With their 2024 Copa América concluded, the USMNT will reconvene in early September for home friendlies against Concacaf rival Canada (Sept. 7 in Kansas City, Kan.) and newly crowned OFC Nations Cup winner New Zealand (Sept. 10 in Cincinnati, Ohio). The USA’s next major tournament is the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup, at which it will seek its eighth regional championship.
