Although negotiations are still preliminary, the three clubs have reportedly been receptive to sharing a pitch in the city. It would likely seat 3,000 to 5,000 supporters. The proposed stadium could also serve as a home for Scotland’s women’s national team.

Successful development of the project could see similar “hub venues�?for the women’s game sprout up in other parts of the country (think: Edinburgh, for Hearts and Hibs).

“In women’s football facilities are probably one of our single biggest challenges to growth,�?SWPL Managing Director Fiona McIntyre told the press. “We are trying to grow crowds and some of our biggest clubs play games that are not in, say, Glasgow or Edinburgh or Aberdeen because they have had to go to grounds outside the city to meet the criteria to be broadcast or spectator environments. Gotham FC secured a point Saturday night to open the 2025 NWSL season, playing to a 1-1 draw against Seattle Reign FC after going down a player in the second half.

Several players made their club debut, including forward Gabi Portilho, who scored in the 47th minute to become the first Brazilian to net a goal in their first NWSL game.

Midfielder Jaelin Howell also made her first appearance for Gotham FC against her former team, while rookies Sarah Schupansky and Lilly Reale made their professional debuts and 14-year-old Mak Whitham became the youngest player to appear in an NWSL regular-season match.

“I feel proud of this group,�?Gotham FC coach Juan Carlos Amorós said. ”For us it was a big challenge coming to such a difficult place with a lot of new players. We had three professional debuts. �?It was a question mark to see how we were going to be able to compete in the NWSL. I couldn’t be prouder of the team. We dominated every aspect. We created more than the opposition, dominated the ball. We were unfortunate to concede on the only half-shot that was on target from them, and we go home with one point.�?/p>

Seattle tied the game in the 71st minute when substitute Emeri Adames capitalized on a chaotic sequence in the box, slotting in the equalizer.

A run of five straight titles in the SheBelieves Cup ended Wednesday night for the USWNT, which fell to Japan, 2-1, in the tournament finale at Snapdragon Stadium.

With three victories in as many SheBelieves matches, the Nadeshiko lifted the trophy for the first time in their fifth appearance at the prestigious invitational, while handing the Americans their first defeat in 18 games under coach Emma Hayes. The USA, which had claimed seven of the nine previous SheBelieves championships, finished the four-team, round-robin tournament in second place with two wins and a loss.

Earlier Wednesday, Colombia (1W-2L-0D) clinched third in its first SheBelieves appearance with a 2-1 win over fellow debutant Australia (0W-3L-0D).

After starting 22 of her 23 available players across this month’s first two SheBelieves matches, Hayes on Wednesday selected 10 of the 11 women who kicked off the tournament-opening win over Colombia. The exception was veteran left back Crystal Dunn, who started the second game against Australia and returned to the lineup before a crowd of 17,188 in San Diego.

Dunn joined defenders Tara McKeown, Emily Sonnett and Emily Fox in front of goalkeeper Jane Campbell, who earned her 10th cap. Sam Coffey, Lily Yohannes and captain Lindsay Heaps anchored the U.S. midfield while Ally Sentnor, Yazmeen Ryan and striker Catarina Macario, a San Diego native, comprised the front three.

First Half

Needing all three points to claim first place after Japan entered the match with superior goal difference, the USA found itself in a hole after just 93 seconds. Japan’s Yuka Momiki lifted the eighth-ranked visitors into the lead, shielding the ball from Campbell and Sonnett �?who collided on the play �?before clipping a shot into the empty American net. The U.S. now had to score at least twice.

The resilient hosts recovered quickly, however, and Dunn fed Heaps for a 12th-minute header that was saved by Japan goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita. The Americans were coming, and less than two minutes later, Sentnor �?who certainly made a case during the SheBelieves Cup for further call-ups �?leveled the score.

Macario’s devastating midfield turn sent the Japanese into disarray, and she played a pass through to Sentnor as the rising Utah Royals star raced into the penalty area. Sentnor took one touch and then rifled a shot inside the right post. It was the 21-year-old Sentnor’s second goal of the tournament and her second in her five USWNT appearances. U.S. Soccer’s reigning Young Female Player of the Year also had an assist in the Feb. 23 win over Australia.

Momentum seemed to be with the top-ranked Americans, but Japan weathered that post-goal storm and came close to retaking the lead when Hikaru Kitagawa snuck behind the U.S. defense in the 26th. She barely missed from an acute angle. Japan’s speed on and off the ball, along with its quality in tight spaces, led to a significant first-half possession and shot advantage. When the USA did take control, it often tried to play through the savvy 17-year-old Yohannes, who looked to spread the field and change the tempo. Macario also was an occasional target.

The U.S. had the last good chance near the end of the half as Ryan stole a stoppage-time pass and marauded through midfield before finding Macario for a bid that rolled wide of the left post.

Second Half

Hayes made two changes after intermission, sending left back Jenna Nighswonger and forward Jaedyn Shaw on for Dunn and Sentnor. But once again, Japan started a half on the front foot. Following a foul by Ryan and a brilliant diving save from Campbell on the ensuing 50th-minute free kick, Japanese substitute Toko Koga put the trophy back within Japan’s reach with a short-range goal from Campbell’s rebound.

The USA was again faced with having to score twice. Korbin Albert, Lynn Biyendolo and Alyssa Thompson entered in the 58th, then Tierna Davidson joined them 10 minutes later as the hosts committed more resources to the attack. But the refreshed lineup couldn’t unlock the Japanese, who were able to play a bit more cautiously and manage their lead. Shaw and Davidson tested Manchester City’s Yamashita from distance and Thompson caused trouble with a couple dribbling runs, but the Nadeshiko defended desperately and remained firm. With its late push, the USA narrowed Japan’s overall advantage in shots to 10-9 and put five on target to the visitors�?four.

The USA fell to defeat for the first time in 23 games dating back to a Concacaf W Gold Cup loss to Mexico on Feb. 26, 2024 �?exactly one year earlier. Wednesday’s match was also just the second time in 42 tries that Japan beaten the USA. The Americans now lead the all-time series 32W-2L-8D with the only other outright defeat coming at the Algarve Cup back in March 2012.

The USWNT will return to action in early April with a pair of high-profile friendlies against Brazil, which will be preparing for this summer’s Copa América Femenina. The first rematch of last year’s Olympic final will take place April 5 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, followed by a second engagement on April 8 at PayPal Park in San Jose, Calif.

Japan defeated Colombia, 4-1, earlier Sunday and thanks to its superior goal difference during the four-team round robin, the Nadeshiko need only a draw to win the prestigious annual tournament for the first time. The Americans will have to win to claim their eighth overall SheBelieves championship.

The USWNT will get that opportunity due to a well-earned victory over the spirited Matildas before 25,503fans where coach Emma Hayes made a bit of program history by swapping out all 11 women who started the 2-0 win over Colombia in the SheBelieves opener on Feb. 20. The match marked just the sixth occasion in 758 all-time matches (and first time since 2000) that the USWNT’s starting lineup featured 11 changes in consecutive outings, and it was the first time it occurred during the same event/camp that didn’t include a closed-door friendly.

Sunday’s starting XI was the USA’s youngest since March 2001 and featured international debutant Claire Hutton, the 19-year-old Kansas City Current midfielder, and first-time captain Tierna Davidson, who earned her 66th cap. Alyssa and Gisele Thompson were deployed on the right and became the second set of sisters to start a USWNT game together �?Kristie and Samatha Mewis did it three times, most recently on July 5, 2021.

First Half

Mandy McGlynn received her second career nod in goal while left back Crystal Dunn (appearing for the USA for first time since last summer’s Olympic final) and Biyendolo (formerly Williams, who scored her first goal under her married name), added some big-game pedigree.

It took only 41 seconds for that refreshed lineup to make an impact. The USA built quickly through midfield before left forward Emma Sears dribbled toward the penalty area and attracted a trio of Australian defenders. Sears�?foray gave midfielder Jaedyn Shaw the space and time to finish a smart overlapping run and after receiving a short through pass, Shaw slid the ball across the six-yard line to Biyendolo. The simple finish was Biyendolo’s 22nd international goal, the USA’s 50th in SheBelieves history and its fastest to start a game since Ashley Hatch scored on 24 seconds in a November 2021 friendly against the same opponent.

While there are two first-minute goals in U.S. history for which the exact second of the score is unknown, Biyendolo’s goal was the ninth fastest in USWNT history for goals in which U.S. Soccer has an exact time.

Biyendolo had an eighth-minute tap-in nullified for offside and then forced a leaping save from Australia’s Teagan Micah in the 16th. The USA’s speed and efficiency in the attack was giving the fifteenth-ranked Matildas trouble and the visitors�?attempt to build through shorter passes in order to settle the tempo invited U.S. pressure. In the 25th, midfielder Korbin Albert nicked the ball and set up a shot from Shaw that sailed just beyond the left post. Although Australia’s spacing and possession improved as intermission approached, none of its five first-half shots required McGlynn’s intervention.

Second Half

Davidson’s timely recovery after McGlynn was pressured into a turnover by Australia’s Holly McNamara preserved the U.S. lead early in the second half. The goalkeeper recovered quickly, however, and punched away two threatening Matilda corner kicks in the 53rd. Biyendolo then nearly capitalized on an Australian giveaway, but after picking off Winonah Heatley’s errant back pass in the 57th, the first-half goal scorer sent her shot into the side netting.

Hayes made four changes in the 62nd minute, sending on Cooper, defender Tara McKeown, forward Yazmeen Ryan and forward Ally Sentnor. Six minutes later, Cooper and Sentnor combined to double the American lead. Defender Gisele Thompson recovered a rebound in the Australian penalty area and knocked the ball to Hutton, who slipped a perfect through pass back inside to Sentnor. The 21-year-old then cut the ball back past an Australian defender, and it rolled straight to Cooper, who wasted no time in delivering a 10-yard shot inside the left post. It was the 22-year-old Current forward’s first international goal in her second appearance, and it was Sentnor’s first senior assist (she scored against Colombia on Feb. 20).

The Matildas recovered from that blow quickly and halved the deficit with a lightning strike of a goal in the 80th. A long ball from the Australian half found veteran winger Hayley Raso on the right and her driven cross was headed in by substitute forward Michelle Heyman. Australia remained in contention thanks to Micah’s spectacular save on Sentnor in the 88th, but the USA closed the game out without further incident, setting up the SheBelieves showdown with Japan.

The Americans outshot the visitors, 15-7, and the Matildas�?only shot on target was Heyman’s. The USA now hold a 30W-1L-5D advantage in the all-time series against Australia.
